WI25-01: Lessons from the Middle Space: The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) application process for citizens reintegrating after incarceration

Researchers

Abstract

Prisons have a high concentration of individuals who, upon release, will be at risk of homelessness and unemployment because of significant mental and/or physical health problems. This population is most likely to benefit from SSI. This project aims to document the challenges and experiences of formerly incarcerated citizens with the SSI application process. The long-term aim of this socio-legal project is to improve the application and acceptance rate of SSI for formerly incarcerated residents returning to some of the poorest communities in the nation.
